optirun or primus commands to lauch your apps to use the nvidia driver.
If you don't want to bother with the intel chip, then I would suggest

Update: it might be related to the power saving settings. I had "When
the lid is closed" set to do nothing both for on battery power and for
when plugged in. I set them to Suspend and the computer finally
shutdown. I don't dare to boot up again and try to shutdown until
tomorrow.
