I have experienced similar freezes in my acer v5 121 with Amd c70
processor. But if I keep the default kernel 3.8.0.19 with Ubuntu 13.04

I just purged a ppa that I used to install the "infinality" font
rendering,
sudo ppa-purge ppa:no1wantdthisname/ppa
This solved the bug for me on Ubuntu 13.04, so I can go on using Gimp in
my works.
