queue up some video files (I first noticed this on some large (800MB) .mkv
files: 1080p, H264, 24fps, AAC audio)
bring up the system monitor, and watch the memory usage for totem go up and up
as the video plays.
at the end of the first video, memory usage is around 600-900MB
Till, I have to apologize for a) using a super-stupid naming scheme for
the two files that even I find confusing and b) for not getting that
you're talking about the other file. Well.

FWIW, I have the exact same symptom with Lucid on a amd64 Thinkpad with:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
Subsystem: Lenovo Device 20e4
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- P
Changed status to Invalid as it has been found to be a nuance of gcc,
not a bug in Ubuntu.

Here's the actual process.
It seems that gcc now send the linker flag --as-needed to ld.
This has the effect of discarding any specified libraries that do not have
symbols that are required for linking.
In the first instance, all the libraries were being discarded be cause there
were no unresolv
