just tested without the 'splash' (and quiet) boot params. I get the same
behavior : ALT-F1 gets me to a blank screen, unable to ALT-F7 back into
Unity. Hardware poweroff (10 seconds on the power on button) is the
only way out of this.

2011.3+git2017-0ubuntu1 were part of a first attempt at SRU'ing an entire
upstream stable update. In addition to missing whatever stable updates have
come in the 20 weeks since that was uploaded to -proposed, the actual update
#96 @Manu
Removing .Xauthority allows me to log into the 3D unity mode, but none of the
compiz effects actually work. (Unlike the guest mode login).
By the way this bug totally screws up cairo-dock in opengl mode.
There seems to be no way to turn that off and now the dock doesn't even
show.

Thanks. I was wondering if it was a corrupted download, but as there
were no checksum failures flagged, so I thought I should go ahead and
report it anyways.
Will try this again after the clean, and If I still get this even after
a redownload, I'll reopen this bug.

i tried to install new version on my ASUS 6U. previously it did not
start after new install and came up with lots of error list and just
stopped.
reinstalled 11.10 and then upgraded to 12.04, thanks it worked but i
kept all absolete packages(might have worked due to this).
