The 'iface eth1000 inet dhcp' trick didn't quite wok for me, but I'm not

I can confirm this problem also happens for me.
If I let it automatically decide the size of the partitition and create

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running pure up-to-date Hardy 32-bit.
Sometimes when I try to log out via System -> Quit -> Log Out, nothing
happens. i.e., the Quit menu closes but I stay logged-in and everything
is still running, as if I had just canceled. When I do System ->
I can confirm this bug. It happened to me for about 45 minutes, while I
scrambled for a meaningful solution.
I don't know many details, but I *believe* that I did use Alacarte to
edit my menus. After it's all said and done, POOF, no more
Applications.

That's another blunder , that anybody gets to download this stuff,

After today's intrepid update, I got the restricted drivers notification
on my desktop for the first time. I had it install the nvidia driver
(96) and restarted X. Now it's stuck with the VESA driver and I can't
get over 800x600 resolution.

Probably a problem with the new remote volume monitor, but it's
definitely either a GIO or (more likely) a GVFS issue, so I'm
reassigning to GVFS for now. Is there a guaranteed way to reproduce
