FYI, I uploaded a new hal into hardy which reverts the recent patch to
detect virtual network interfaces. So this is at least not a blocker for
hardy any more, but one day it will come back, so it eventually needs to
get fixed.

I can't tell if this is an Ubuntu specific problem or upstream problem
since the upstream version (2.4.0~rc2) claims it doesn't support any
audio formats that I attempted to use (.wav and .ogg) even though it
showed me in the file selection dialog.

Iv'e checked with the preview again enabled again and now it doesn't
appear in a separate window, but in the preview panel. The last time I
enabled the preview panel once the files were added to the project,
while this time I had the preview panel enabled from the beggining.

I think I've got it.
/etc/nsswitch.conf has the following line in it:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4
I swapped it for this line, getting rid of the 'mdns4' records:
hosts: files dns [NOTFOUND=return]
After this and a 'sudo /etc/inet.d/networking restar
