Hello,
I used to have this problem as well but I have recently 'fixed' it. I got so
fed up of long load times I actually used fvwm-crystal instead of gnome for a
while.
Anyways to fix it I disabled many start up services that start along
gnome. To do this go to System->Preferences->Sessions
no thats fine, I will change my code to match

it when external monitor is connected or add it to your start scripts with a

I personally use the gdm init scripts which checks if an external monitor is
connected. If so it disables LFP.

As the poster pwii mentioned, you need to remove the entry (or comment out)
in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-oss.
You should note that as Lee Revell mentioned, this module could potentially
lead to system lock ups - have a rescue CD handy to add the module back into
the blacklist if it does

I'm glad it helped, nickytl, but I wouldn't say "problem is fixed", but
rather "we have a workaround". The goal of these bug reports is still to
improve the distribution, isn't it?
The workaround will be useless for someone who needs to have color depth
at 24 for some other reason.

I see a little problem, there is a packaging change (the translation) which is
not shown when working with your interdiff.
You have added this change in the changelog of 0.2.1.13-0ubuntu1 which has not
been submitted I guess?
To solve this I added the "* Added Italian translation" entry to change

I just did a clean install of Gutsy on an amd 64
