I also still have a crackling sound in the left channel when I plug in a pair of headphones using an hp laptop. I had this with 19.04,19.10 and now still with 20.04. Would be nice if it could be fixed. The solution by Robert Joynt does fix the problem, but it is a work around. Would be nice if
