Even though I'm not involved with that packaging project, my gut feeling
is that Debian would appreciate helping hands:
https://salsa.debian.org/debian/maliit-framework
https://salsa.debian.org/debian/maliit-keyboard
The new packages would then trickle down to Ubuntu.
