HPlip was working fine on my Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit then just seemed to
disappear.
None of these solutions worked for me.

Thanks Matthias. The problem appears to have been sorted out by the
developers because a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 solved the problem
for me.

A clean install of Ubuntu 16.04 solved the problem. Not the ideal
solution, hopefully the reason will be unearthed and published soon.
