I installed nslcd, libnss-ldapd, migration-tools, slapd, ldapscripts.
Using the migration-scripts I copied the users to LDAP. getent shadow
(as root) shows encrypted passwords and everything works as it should.
Lightdm however, doesn't. I'm unable to logon using Xephyr (XDMCP)
Tested 8.59+17.10.20170606-0ubuntu2.20.10.1 on groovy and the test
scenario outlined in the description is working now. The auth dialog no
longer crashes singond.

You're right btw that it's a dpkg bug, but it's a bit more subtle. The
cleanup that dpkg performs after installation is meant to preserve the
hold state for non-installed packages. This is handled by the
pkg_is_informative function, which classifies everything with "pkg->want
!= PKG_WANT_UNKNOWN" a
Whether it's a bug in apt or in something used by apt doesn't really
make a difference from an end user perspective. Can this bug be reopened
as a dpkg bug, then, or should I report that as a new bug?

I did also see this on installed kubuntu systems, it's just far harder
to reproduce there because of the racy nature of the issue. In fact, the
only reason I know about the issue is because the colors are just so far
off that they tripped up our openqa tests and flak
enough ffdc data

This happens at ibmca destruction time.
Looks like there is some kind of double free or so in the
destructor for the ibmca engine. We had some issues like
this in the past already. I'll have a look onto the code ...

Occured here today. Running this simple command to remove old kernels
and unused packages worked around the issue:
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge
Alternatively, and to be able to remove even manually installed kernels, you
could use:
sudo purge-old-kernels

I installed backports-4.2 rc1 something. Now iwconfig reports 390 Mb/s
as Bit rate, regardless of what we're nominally handshaked on with the
AP. It looks better, but isn't any faster.

I was unable to connect to libvirtd from my regular user account after
upgrading to Utopic Unicorn.
The error from 'virsh list' was something about that libvirtd couldn't
