One part of this issue seems to be, MAYBE, that VLC is enabling DPMS
somehow. It should not be allowed to do that.

When I close the lid on my laptop to put Kubuntu to sleep, it wakes up
with a black screen - with the exception of a single blinking cursor (_)
in the upper left corner. Machine is clearly on. Turning off/back on
gets the machine back into a good state.

I'm glad my initial stubborness is leading to this avalanche of users
echoing me. I feel all your pain, I have been there and it sucks!
I would suggest this update/patch needs to go into not only the new
versions of Ubuntu, but also the LTS distribution repos also, as a
stability bugfix.
