I tried that as I mentioned above. It doesn't crash in that scenario.
I can ssh in from another computer and run thunar but I can't reproduce
the crash this way. This is why I think it might have to do with the
X11 server or lightdm.

I never removed GDK_SYNCHRONIZE from /etc/environment. It's been set
that way for a few reboots. In addition, I confirmed it was set to 1
before running gdb.
