What we see in the ps output is that for some reason it seems like
systemctl prompts for a password. Which is unusual because apt/dpkg runs
as root so there should be no need for this. Any further hints for us?

which each branch merged or release. This includes an automatic upgrade

I had these exact same symptoms today with my nVidia GTX 960 after doing
a platform upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04.
Issue was actually dead simple to fix, the upgrade to 18.04 removed some
PPAs (including the

PPA introduced a bug with icons disappearing from the Gnome top panel
right-side icon set, specifically, the keyboard layout
indicator/switcher.
For now, I have removed the PPA, reverted the gnome-shell version, and I

machine and this machine is also affected.
I have updated the initramfs-tools to version: 0.130ubuntu3.3 but this
doesnt solve the issue.
Other things i have done without success:

This happend to me repeatedly on Ubuntu Bionic too, making snaps
uninstallable. How can such bugs come through. They can be easily
catched with automated tests. I remember this bug happened to me after a
fresh Ubuntu Bionic installation. An now again after updating snap.
