Still here with Ubuntu 18.04 on ThinkPad P51s

Identical symptoms, package version, distro version, also ALC298, also
tried windows, only difference is computer model (Lenovo T570).
Confirmed on two identical computers with identical setups. Sorry, don't
know how to generate a new report or add debug info.

I just ran into this situation myself. After I received the error
report and let the upgrade recover, running the dpkg command gives me...
diversion by systemd-shim from:
/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.systemd1.service
diversion by systemd-shim to:

I don't know which kernel version I did use in Xenial (initially I used
the normal one, the kernel installed by default, but then I installed
UKUU so couldn't remember, but I never had this problem with previous
versions of Kubuntu nor any other flavor of Ubuntu nor in any Linux

Yes, the critical connection is the option to use in this case.
You may also check the leases themselves in /run/systemd/netif/leases
and check if the T1/T2/Lifetime are sensible, with each subsequent one

Yes, that is the way to go here. Trusty for example has Soundtouch 1.7
so we build it with our own static library anyway. If Ubuntu has 2.0.0
