I have ran the tool a few times because it seemed to be crashing - at
first it wouldn't run at all complaining about missing PyQT, so I
installed python-qt-binding; then it seemed to be crashing due to
missing pathlib, so I installed that as well and ran it again.

DESKTOP_SESSION correctly, it's that SDDM uses an absolute path for this
instead of just the base name like every other window manager.

I've attached a boot recording - all went smoothly this time. I trimmed
it down to just the boot log itself. It may look like I cut off the
start of the log, but I didn't. I have the complete file, though, if
needed, including what happens after the boot (not much visibly). If
it's not clear enough

1) Removing the kernel parameter causes the same problem (plus, shutdown
doesn't work.)
2) I cannot take the graphics card out of the laptop, but I uninstalled

test http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise
mate-power-manager and polkit-qt-1 still have consolekit as a non-
default alternative dependency. They should be updated to drop this
reference, so that all users will be migrated to libpam-systemd on
upgrade if they haven't been already.
This will not block consolekit's removal from the bionic
