I was not able to reproduce the problem using trusty + 3.19 kernel and
libvirt alone. I was able to scale appropriately to 63 domains using
VFs.
I guess next step is to test the OpenStack instructions identified, but
then it may be a problem lying elsewhere.

AppArmor denials can usually be addressed by changing ./configure flags
or hardcoded paths or something, but there's not much to be done for

I am using a Thinpad laptop with a TrackPoint, which I find more convenient to
use than the TouchPad.
Turned the TouchPad off via the System Settings (mouse & touchpad), which works
for a while.

I've been bisecting this for most of the day yesterday and this morning;
tracked it down to a single commit in freetype. After some more
refining, I managed to reduce this to two lines of change reverting the
bad commit.
