FYI, network-manager should ignore any interfaces defined in
/etc/network/interfaces.
Which is not to say this bug isn't frustrating, just that you should be
able to manually configure things as you wish without removing network-
manager :D

through that and comparing outputs. It seems to me that most of the
issues involved was that the DSP was not running or that output was
being directed to a non-existent S/PDIF jack.

I too cannot understand why this fix was refused to backport to trusty.
We just spent two man-weeks tracking down this issue in one of our
applications, and to find that a severe race condition in libc was fixed
in Debian over a year ago but still not fixed in a *long term supported*
version of Ubu
