I already upgraded so I just have to use recall at this point. From a
user's perspective, it would be useful to know why the system dropped to
a shell. Perhaps an error message that says "bad entry in /etc/fstab on
line 5" or something like that.

I have tried adding "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi" to
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. Sound settings seem to recognize a headset is
plugged with that option, but the headset's mic itself remains deaf, no matter
how much boost I give it. I guess the option isn't working correctl

Indeed, the "blacklisted-media-players" settings key hasn't been honored
for a couple of ubuntu releases.
The idea is that applications have UI to disable integration into the
sound menu. For example in VLC, you can disable it in Preferences (look
for "DBus control interface"). It might make sense

Not fixed in 15.04. G75VW keyboard backlight and screen brightness
settings are not saved. Also, the screen flashes like hell when trying
to change the brightness using the 'Fn' keys.
