squirrelmail.mo file was installed. PHP gettext extension caches some

Hello,
i read the things on the homepage about gettext because in my installation
(Suse 9.3, but with PHP 4 and not 5) setting the language to german had no
effect.
I looked in my php installation and in the phpinfo, but gettext is enabled!
What can i look else?
