Thanks for your responses. I have had a look in Outlook, and once you have deleted messages there is a "purge deleted emails" option in the menus. Unfortunately I cannot find an option which is an IMAP equivalent to "empty deleted folder on exit". This explains the behaviour and I may write a macr

I use SquirrelMail 1.4.4 for remote access to my mail (Courier) and Outlook XP when at home. In SquirrelMail folder options I have selected to show both unseen and total numbers. When I have deleted mails via Outlook, the next time I go into SquirrelMail the "total" number for that folder is not z
