This has already been answered, but I thought I would throw my 2¢ in,
just in case the user is still confused.
squirrelmail is a mail client -- not a mail server. It happens to run on
the server and present a web interface for users to access, but it then
connects to and depends on the server side

Turn off Auto Expunge in Squirrelmail, from the conf.pl script.
