If you're looking for a simple-n-easy drop-in-replacement for uw-imap,
courier might not be it. If you're looking for a great replacement,
courier-imap is hard to beat.
It's really not *_all_* that difficult to install courier-imap,

You might want to consider upgrading your SquirrelMail installation.
You're currently using 1.0
Have you looked at Courier-IMAP? I use that with Squirrelmail & LDAP and
it works great.
