Could be either. They both have settings for auto-purge after some period of
time. I think the SM one is a plugin.
You should probably check your Courier-IMAP config. I know it has a setting to
auto-purge old deleted items. I think it defaults to around 2 weeks.

The emails that I delete seem to be being purged so that I only have
the last 2 weeks trash available.
Is this a squirrelmail setting - or courier - the IMAP server I use.
