I will assume you are using Sendmail.. If you have just performed an update to
your
Sendmail MTA there is an entry in the config file sendmail.cf that will by
default
not permit any mail to an outside domain.. ( at least on a RedHat/Fedora
install). I
think it was something like:

I would tend to agree. This doesn't look like a Squirrelmail issue, but
an issue with your MTA not being able to contact other mail servers.
I would do as John and Peter have suggested. From the mail server, try
using telnet to connect to other mail servers. An example done under
Linux, but is app

Sidestep SM and try to contact the SMTP server directly (with Telnet).
