For some reason the ldap address book is only available under the address
button in the compose window

Just to say that I have been having intermittent errors acccessing
squirrelmail where the imap and mySQL servers were behind a Cisco PIX
firewall It occured to me that the setting in php for mysql
persistent connections might be at fault as the cisco will close
inactive connections
The problem is in connecting to the mysql (I assume) backend database you
have selected for your preferences / addresses, option 9 in conf.pl
