Thanks for your responses. I have had a look in Outlook, and once you have deleted messages there is a "purge deleted emails" option in the menus. Unfortunately I cannot find an option which is an IMAP equivalent to "empty deleted folder on exit". This explains the behaviour and I may write a macr
