I found this in the Squirrelmail FAQ under PHP Errors. The second part
worked for me when I upgraded MySQL.
Preference database error (connect failed). Exiting abnormally - when
trying to use Mysql as a preference database.
One such possible solution is that your using Mysql 4.08 and
indented under the inbox.
How do I, under 1.4.4 change that to be like 1.5.0?
