Look at the permissions for the directory all they way back to root.

I just installed SquirrelMail 1.2.10. I'm able to access the login
page, but I get the following message aftering entering a valid user
name and password:
Error opening ../data/default_pref
Default preference file not found or not readable!
My Web Server is Apache 2.0.43 and I'm running PHP
