Thank you for your quick reply. Meanwhile I found the solution, on some
systems (like mine) you do not start a perl script by typing the name:
config/conf.pl
But by typing:
Config/perl conf.pl
Then it runs!

I've been an SM user since ~1.0 was released in Jan of '01
(or was it '02?). All versions up to 1.4.1 have worked quite
