This is a problem with PHP. They changed the way the extensions are loaded. So now on FreeBSD (that's all I can speak to) you build "PHP" and "PHP-Extensions" separately. In any case, assuming you have php configured to use sessions (ie, built that extension), the problem might be in your php.ini
