I added the maxQueryLength option to DirectSolrSpellchecker in
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-14131 - that landed in 8.5.0 so
should be available to you.

The spellcheck feature was replaced by the suggester in Solr 4, released in
2012,
so I would not expect any changes in spellcheck.
