After some more reading and testing I found the solution.
Just in case someone else needs it here are the results.
original query:
q=collection:ftmuenster+AND+-description:*&fl=*
--> numFound="1877"
frange query:
q=collection:ftmuenster&fq={!frange+l=0+u=0}exist
Hello,
A function query matches all docs. Use {!frange} if you want to select docs
with some particular values.
