Why don't we add a parameter to allow non programmers to change it?

Is the question how/where to set that?
This is what I found in my repo checkout:
$ ffxg COMPRE
./core/src/test-files/solr/collection1/conf/solrconfig-slave.xml:
COMPRESSION
Hm, but that's about replication compression. Maybe we don't have any
examples of this in configs?
