I get the same thing once in a while. I've been getting it for years.
I don't know what causes it. Mine usually flashes, and is total
nonsensicle.
I've filed bugs on it. We don't know why it does this. If you can
reproduce it consistently, I can add it to my bug.

A future version of screen will have a feature that will make screen
itself slightly less obtrusive. It will not fix the issue of C-a a a
