I had the same problem recently and my solution was to compile PGNs
downloaded from "the week in chess" which resulted in a data base
covering 2.3 million games. There's a little windows software that
you can use for that:

".sci" is the database format for Scidb. Scid databases are ".si4"

You can import pgn files inside SCID. There are many sources for games and
puzzles.
