I would add :
3) Allow the navigation toolbar to be at the right of the board.
That would alleviate the layers of toolbars at the top. That would
also make a more squared surface for the board to occupy. The latter
would optimize the board size, for the surface it takes in the
interface.

1) have (or allow for) coordinates on the board
2) allow board rotation
