Ubuntu 11.10 (oneric) has scid version 4.3. You can download the sources of the Ubuntu package using: sudo apt-get source scid Then enter the new directory (cd scid-4.3*), apply your changes, and build a Ubuntu package. See this page for details: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto
