Anyway, as best as i can see, my code does not actually add
variations at the end of the game. If it's the start of a new game,
the variation is promoted to mainline. If it's the end of the game,
it makes a variation against the last move just like before, but move

And so I stand corrected. The important sentence is

The alternate move sequence given by an RAV is one that
may be legally played by first unplaying the move that appears immediately
prior to the RAV.

for as it stands, the 1.e4 (1..d5) example satisfies the formal
syntax, IMHO. This senten

I didn't asked for a PGN that Scid can parse. I asked how you want that PGN to
look - as I couldn't
I know what you asked. Scid, as most of the chess utilities around,
can't parse these PGN. I suspect you know that too, hence the
rhetorical question.
My point is that the PGN specification allows for annotations before
the end of game marker. Scid and most chess utilities can't do that
yet. H

I have not looked at the patch, so I don't know how this solves the problem
(I'm just a user).
However, is there any special reason why it can't be possible to have
variations at the end of the game? That would solve the multiple variations
thing from the other thread too (correspondence games wit
Issue: Setup a position from FEN (or start a new game), then run an
analysis engine. Click "add variation" button, but nothing is added
because game is at start.
