Scid used to display the actual name (e.g., "Sicilian Najdorf") of the opening
when I selected Game --> Identify Opening. Now it moves to a position early in
the game, presumably the position that uniquely determines the ECO code, but no

I have Scid version 4.6.0 on my Linux laptop. When I enter moves, say, by
moving the e-pawn from e2 to e4, the pawn moves as it should but when I release
the mouse, the pawn immediately jumps back to e2 on its own and repeats the
move to e4. It's annoying and almost makes me dizzy after entering
I have Scid 4.6.2. Is there a way to stop Scid from automatically loading the
example game database and pictures of Tal and Botvinnik at startup?

Let me see if I can reproduce that 1807* bug, and, if so, I'll report the

Thanks, Benoit. That's good advice about being cautious with using a
particular number such as 1300 for unrated players. I'm willing to just leave
that field blank (is that what you are recommending?) except that my games
database got corrupted when I started entering both USCF and ELO ratings.

Can you please help me with some advanced maintenance tasks?
1. I want to change every rating in my database from "ELO" to "USCF."

1300 is a more realistic initial rating for unrated players.)

Ah, that's much better than my way. Thank you.

I do this with Edit --> Set Up Start Board. Then I start the analysis engine
but quickly cover up its output with another window (I use the Book Window F6
for that). Let it run for a few minutes and then look at the engine analysis
for the solution.

Press the "start/stop trial mode" button to try out an idea on the board. It's
the button that looks like a hammer with a question mark above it. When you're
done looking at the variation, just press the button again.

This is a message to Mikhail Kalenkov, who was kind enough to build a scid RPM
for Fedora available at http://katrine.lpi.ru/kalenkov/.
Thank you very much for providing the RPM. It is much, much simpler than having
to build scid from source code. But I have a suggestion. Can you please modify
