For those who might be interested.
Just applied several updates for Ubuntu.
The bug is gone. Final proof the bug was
in Ubuntu and not Scid.
Sorry to waste some of you time.
BTW, Scid is great, just in case any had
doubts about my opinion.

clicking Options --> fonts --> fixed
causes scid to immediatly terminate as soon as
the 'fixed' is clicked on.
Under Windows XP using scid 3.6.23 this does not
happen. Scid 3.6.24 bug? or Ubuntu 8.04 bug?
