Indeed,
Trial mode is a good option, because allows several things, without
registering the moves and once finished the variation, returning to the
position where the variation started.
This can be handy in the following situations:

indeed i removed the "trial mode" in Scid v.4.6.
The problem is that it requires to decide whether the analysis is
interesting before actually making analysis.
There are better solutions to discard the analysis
Ah, I see now! I should be more careful before giving "advice"! I spend
more time in "scid vs pc", so I guess did not notice these features
missing in mainline scid 4.6

I checked with SCID 4.5 and can confirm this. The trial mode is not there
anymore.
There used to be a shortcut for this. (Can't recall which - "a"?) I'd have
to do tests.

in 2500 game database of my games (online blitz) the numbers range from
20 to 30 and I don't see any correlation with results
