The .bin that you're mentioning are the binary books you wish to use, right?
In that case, the message error usually means that you need to
1. go to Options/Books directory;
2. select the directory where you have your engines books.
3. save your Options.

I have successfully iinstalled SCID 4.4 on Ubuntu 12.10. While opening
scid, it says "Books directory not found". I have checked that th books
folder is there with .bin files in location /usr/local/share/scid.
How to fix the issue ?

Is the ANNOTATE button removed from SCID? I tried installing SCIDVSPC. I
found it hard initially to instal it (as far as I remember, the issues were
with tcl/tk) and after installing with lot of effort, I did not like it. I
like the SCID more.
