After seeing this thread, I found a Dream Cheeky board on eBay for $12, and
bought it. I can confirm that it works quite well (at least, the software
does. The hardware is appropriately primitive).
I think it's definitely worth having an option in mainline Scid for this,
it's actually pretty neat.
