I'm running Scid 4.2.2 on Ubuntu 9.10 and I am quite happy with it. (I
have it hooked up via UCI to DeepShredder12.)

I do not understand what you want to achieve. It's actually working the
other way round you set up a position and the tree fills your filter.
But all this is done automagically.
