There's no real reason why it couldn't be the first partition. Bear in
mind though, that if you're going to boot from that drive your kernel needs
to be physically within the first 1024 cylinders.

Hello !
I made an instalation for RH 4.2 and I made two partitions. First partition
( 50 Mb ) for swap and the second for linux. I formated all the partition
and the instalation was good.
But, when I rebooted the system, I got an swap error :
" swap_free : swap-space map bad (entry 8000)
