memory reporting error?

Howdy all. I've got a compaq Pentium Pro powered machine that I want to install RH 8.0 on. the problem is that linux seems to be detecting the memory incorrectly. the BIOS check gives the correct result. but RH's installer says "not enough memory" is supposedly has 196MB ram. what gives?
