I use LPRng and piggy back the printing jobs thru' a Win98 box to a
hp845c deskjet. That can be useful. But LPRng has an easy interface to
use to setup printing from withing GNOME (that is what I use)

I get an error when I print in linux. It says printing and spooling is
disabled. But i restard lpd and I have selected a printer in the list. It
printed for me once but that was it. And that was only a test print.

Well I gave.. I installed pdq on the remote machine
and use lpd_print to get the jobs printed

You should consider installing apsfilter (the latest version) from
www.rpmfind.net.
In the latest version of apsfilter there is the option of:
Printing from a UNIX to Windows (using Samba)
Printing from UNIX to UNIX

I have (2) linux machines capeblanco with a functioning printer
and nubble without a printer.
The printcap on nubble is:
