Just had this problem on a box...in my case, one of the zone setups in
/etc/named.conf had an error in what was typed...in my case, it was a
missing " before the name of the domain.

does contain 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain, and
/etc/nsswitch.con lists hosts as files dns.
Any ideas?
