installation had a .so module that was preventing the new packages to be upgraded. The new install bypassed that version of the .so. Galeon installation complained of a lock file, but that's ok. It works now.

Actually I did a 'rpm --rebuilddb' and
db-redhat, is that it will return the package version from the list of
7.2 packages. It shouldn't hurt anything though.

I appreciate the reasoned summaries of the debates. The loudest complaints
I've heard have come from slashdot, and I expect them to scream just for the
sake of screaming sometimes. But since the problem was centered around such a
vital component as the c compiler, I want to be
I just wanted to say thanks to the list for the help offered on this
latest project of mine which was to create a kickstart network install
for a standard intallation. I took it a little farther and was able to
create a distribution tree based on 6.2 that includes all the errata
upgrades
